WATCH: Mama Joy roasted after failing Bafana Bafana 2010 quiz
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

South African superfan Joy Chauke, popularly known as Mama Joy, has once again come under fire on social media after struggling through a football quiz conducted by former Orlando Pirates star Michael Morton.

The retired midfielder was at Cape Town Stadium last week during Bafana Bafana’s international friendly against Panama.

Ahead of kick-off, Morton hosted a quiz with fans focused on South Africa’s 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign, with a new national team jersey up for grabs.

Mama Joy took part in the challenge but got several answers wrong, prompting widespread criticism online. Many questioned whether she is a genuine football supporter or simply attends matches for the atmosphere and perks.

The video quickly went viral, adding fuel to an already and the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie.

Mama Joy blasted

The controversy follows her recent criticism of McKenzie’s decision to halt sponsored trips to major sporting events, including the upcoming FIFA World Cup set to take place in June. In response, McKenzie suggested that Chauke’s French husband should cover the cost of her trip.

Despite the backlash, Mama Joy defended her support for the national team on social media.

“Behind you @BafanaBafana, with or without Gayton McKenzie. Live or on TV. The World Cup is just around the corner,” she posted.

She added: “It is not a romantic trip my husband will pay for a romantic trip. Watch the space.”

Her comments were met with further criticism, with some fans accusing her of entitlement.

Following the release of the quiz video in which she struggled to recall key figures such as the captain and coach of the 2010 World Cup squad, scrutiny over her football knowledge intensified.

Social media users were quick to weigh in:

“Even the coach. How embarrassing for the so-called superfan. These people go to the stadium only to appear on cameras,” wrote @NcebaNjeje.

“She doesn’t know Mbazo’s name?” added @alexsithole.

“I’m starting to believe Mama Joy only began supporting football after 2010,” said @therealjaphbee.
