Two-team battle for Betway Premiership title
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Orlando Pirates remained at the summit of the Betway Premiership after edging Polokwane City 2-1 on Wednesday night, while closest rivals Mamelodi Sundowns also secured a narrow victory to keep the title race alive.

It proved to be a dramatic evening across the league with key results affecting both the title battle and the relegation fight.

Orlando Pirates leave it late in Polokwane

Orlando Pirates secured all three points in the pouring rain in Polokwane thanks to a dramatic late winner from Patrick Maswanganyi.

The Buccaneers had taken the lead shortly after the break through Relebohile Mofokeng, whose resurgence in form will be encouraging for Hugo Broos as he prepares Bafana Bafana team for upcoming international commitments.

Polokwane fought back when Bonginkosi Dlamini levelled the scores four minutes from time, but Maswanganyi struck in the final minute of regulation time to seal victory for the Soweto giants.

The result maintains Orlando Pirates’ impressive away record this season, with the Soweto side now having collected 23 points from 10 matches on the road.

Their +23 goal difference keeps them ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns (+22) at the top of the table.

Mamelodi Sundowns grind out win despite red card

At Loftus Versfeld, Mamelodi Sundowns secured their sixth consecutive league victory with a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows.

Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring with a powerful strike from outside the box before Iqraam Rayners doubled the advantage with a header – his third goal in two matches.

Golden Arrows responded when Sede Dion converted a penalty to take his tally to 10 goals for the season, strengthening his lead in the Golden Boot race.

Masandawana were reduced to 10 men after Jayden Adams was shown a straight red card shortly after the second goal, but Miguel Cardoso’s side held firm to claim the win.

Sekhukhune United salvage draw

Sekhukhune United rescued a late point in a 1-1 draw against Durban City.

Durban City looked set for victory after Saziso Magawana put them ahead, but Tshepho Mashiloane struck late to level the match.

Despite the draw, Sekhukhune remain 11 points behind the top two, further reinforcing the sense that the title race has become a two-horse contest between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Gallants revive survival hopes

Marumo Gallants boosted their survival chances with a 3-1 comeback victory over Chippa United.

Chippa had taken the lead through Harold Majadibodu, but Gallants turned the match around in the second half with goals from Phillip Ndlondlo, Msindisi Kunene and Mohamed Doumbia.

The result ended a seven-match losing streak and came just days after the club suspended head coach Alexandre Lafitte.

AmaZulu frustrated by bottom side

AmaZulu FC were held to a goalless draw by struggling Magesi FC in Durban.

Usuthu finished the match with 10 men after Zimbabwean striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya received two yellow cards in the second half.

Magesi arguably had the better opportunities but neither side could find the breakthrough in a lacklustre encounter.
