Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a persistent knee injury.
The Bafana Bafana international has reportedly been struggling with the problem, with surgery now being considered as a possible solution.
According to Soccer Laduma, Pirates’ medical team is assessing whether Mbatha will require an operation, which could keep him out for several weeks.
“Well-placed sources have informed the Siya crew that the 26-year-old Bafana Bafana international is not only an immediate doubt for Wednesday’s Betway Premiership clash against AmaZulu, but could also be ruled out for the foreseeable future. The club is expected to issue an official statement once full medical assessments are concluded,” the publication reported.
Orlando Pirates to lose both Makgopa and Mbatha
Pirates have already suffered a significant injury setback with Evidence Makgopa ruled out for around two months with a knee injury.
Losing both Makgopa and Mbatha for an extended period would be a major blow for the Buccaneers, particularly with the new season only getting underway.
Captain Nkosinathi Sibisi is another injury concern after picking up a knock during Pirates’ 2-1 MTN8 quarter-final victory over Durban City.
Pirates will be without Makgopa for Wednesday’s clash against AmaZulu, while Sibisi remains a doubt. Mbatha’s availability will depend on the outcome of his medical assessment and whether the club decides surgery is the best course of action.
With the season still in its early stages, Orlando Pirates could decide that addressing Mbatha’s knee problem now is the best option rather than allowing the midfielder to continue playing through the injury.
The Buccaneers do, however, have considerable depth in midfield, which could help them cope with Mbatha’s potential absence.
