Ouaddou Breaks Down Mbokazi’s Key Qualities

Posted on December 12, 2025

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has detailed the key qualities of departing defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

The 20-year-old centre-back made his final appearance for the Buccaneers in Saturday’s Carling Knockout Cup final victory over Marumo Gallants.

Ouaddou said Mbokazi suited their system well, particularly because of his pace at the back.

He added that the young defender excels in duels, is composed on the ball, strong in the air, and capable of both short and long passing.

“First of all, regarding the way we’re playing, with the high block, counter-pressing, and the attacking football, sometimes we take risks and it’s very important to have a central defender with speed,” said Ouaddou.

“That’s because you leave a lot of space at the back. Most of the teams that we play, they play in transition, so he’s been doing a fantastic job.

“When the opponents use the space at the back, you can see how Mbokazi manages to win duels.

“He’s a central defender that is comfortable with his feet. Especially in modern football, you want to build, and you want to cross the lines by passes.

“He’s able to play short and he’s able to play long. He’s strong on his feet and he’s good with the head.”
