Bafana Bafana suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup at the Azteca Stadium on Thursday evening.
It was a frustrating night for Hugo Broos‘ side, who ended the match with nine men and rarely looked capable of troubling the hosts.
Many supporters and pundits criticised Bafana‘s cautious approach, arguing that the team abandoned the attacking style that had served them well during qualification.
South Africa were under pressure from the opening whistle, with Mexico creating a clear opportunity from their first corner kick.
The breakthrough arrived in the eighth minute after a costly error from Sphephelo Sithole.
Bafana punished by Mexico
After receiving a short pass from Ronwen Williams deep inside his own half, Sithole failed to control the ball and was dispossessed.
The loose ball fell kindly to Julián Quiñones, who made no mistake as he fired past Williams to send the home supporters into celebration.
Things went from bad to worse in the second half when Sithole was shown a red card before Raúl Jiménez sealed the victory with Mexico’s second goal.
Bafana players who flopped against Mexico
Sphephelo Sithole – 1/10
It was a nightmare performance from Sithole. His mistake gifted Mexico the opening goal and immediately put South Africa on the back foot.
Broos opted to keep him on the field after halftime, but the decision backfired as Sithole was later sent off for denying Brian Gutiérrez a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The midfielder looked short of confidence throughout and struggled to recover from his early error. Had Bafana introduced a more attack-minded player earlier, they may have posed a greater threat going forward.
Iqraam Rayners – 3/10
The Mamelodi Sundowns forward endured a difficult evening and never managed to impose himself on the game.
Rayners struggled to link up with the midfield and strike partner Lyle Foster, while Mexico’s defenders comfortably dealt with his movement. He failed to register a meaningful effort on goal and was often outmuscled in possession.
With Oswin Appollis available, Broos may be left wondering whether a different attacking option could have provided more spark.
Bafana punished for defending too deep against Mexico
Teboho Mokoena – 4/10
Usually one of South Africa’s most influential performers, Mokoena found it difficult to stamp his authority on the contest.
The midfielder showed glimpses of quality but spent much of the match chasing the game as Mexico dominated possession. His frustration was evident when he picked up a yellow card.
Forced to play deeper due to Bafana’s defensive setup, Mokoena was unable to drive the team forward and was largely nullified by Mexico’s energetic midfield.
Who fired?
Ronwen Williams – 8/10
Without Williams, the scoreline could have been far more damaging for South Africa.
The Bafana captain produced a string of excellent saves to keep his side in the contest and prevent Mexico from running away with the match. While some may argue he could have done more to stop Quiñones’ opener, he was largely blameless for the defeat.
Williams was comfortably South Africa’s standout performer on the night. Khuliso Mudau and Jayden Adams also delivered respectable displays, but the majority of the squad failed to reach their usual standards.
