Is Kaizer Chiefs star peaking in time for FIFA World Cup 2026 selection?

Brandon Petersen may have strengthened his case for a place in South Africa’s FIFA World Cup 2026 squad after another impressive display for Kaizer Chiefs – with former defender Matthew Booth publicly backing the goalkeeper for selection.

Petersen delivered a composed performance as Kaizer Chiefs secured a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United on Saturday, a result that ensured Amakhosi’s return to continental football.

Goals from youngster Mfundo Vilakazi and in-form attacker Glody Lilepo wrapped up the victory, but it was Petersen’s crucial late intervention that stole headlines.

Brandon Petersen Delivers Under Pressure

Having only recently returned from appendix surgery, Petersen showed sharp reflexes and composure to collect his 14th clean sheet of the season.

His standout moment came late in the match when Kaizer Chiefs looked set to concede.

A dangerous final attack from Sekhukhune saw veteran striker Bradley Grobler presented with a golden opportunity at close range, but Petersen reacted brilliantly, producing an acrobatic reflex save to preserve the clean sheet.

It was the type of match-winning moment that often catches the attention of national team selectors.

Booth Throws Support Behind Chiefs Keeper

Former Bafana defender Matthew Booth believes Petersen has shown enough quality and resilience to earn serious consideration for a World Cup call-up.

“It was a great reflex save from Petersen, who is definitely staking his claim for a trip to the World Cup,” Booth said, according to KickOff.

“I’ve enjoyed his journey over the last couple of seasons, the trials and tribulations. So pulling off a save of that nature was just fantastic.”

Booth’s comments add further fuel to a growing debate over who should complete Bafana’s goalkeeping department for the global tournament.

Fierce Competition for Goalkeeping Places

Despite his strong campaign, Petersen faces significant competition.

Captain Ronwen Williams remains an automatic selection after another commanding season for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Meanwhile, Sipho Chaine has made a compelling argument for inclusion after recently breaking the PSL record for the most clean sheets in a single season.

The final battle may come down to Petersen and Ricardo Goss, who has impressed while on loan at Siwelele.

With coach Hugo Broos expected to announce his final squad on Wednesday, 27 May, Petersen’s timely return to form may have come at exactly the right moment.

For now, the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper has done all he can – perform when it matters most and force his way into the conversation.

Does Brandon Petersen deserve inclusion in Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup 2026 squad?
