FIFA World Cup 2026 is the biggest edition in the tournament’s history, featuring a record 48 teams and the highest prize money ever offered by FIFA.
At the time of publishing, only Spain, Argentina and England remain in contention after booking their places in the final and semi-finals.
The two European giants and defending South American champions are now just a handful of minutes away from lifting football’s most coveted trophy.
Alongside the honour of becoming world champions, they are also competing for the largest winners’ prize in FIFA World Cup history.
$50 MILLION UP FOR GRABS FOR THE CHAMPIONS
FIFA will award the 2026 FIFA World Cup winners a staggering $50 million in prize money.
Here are the relevant exchange rates at the time of publication.
For Spain, the prize is worth approximately €43.87 million, with the nation using the euro as its official currency.
Meanwhile, defending champions Argentina would receive the equivalent of approximately ARS74.18 billion should Lionel Messi and his team-mates successfully defend their title.
Finally, if England manage to finally ‘bring it home’ they would bank approximately £37.37 million.
For South Africans, this equates to around R820 million.
RECORD-BREAKING PRIZE MONEY FOR THE LARGEST EDITION IN HISTORY
Following FIFA’s decision to increase the tournament from 32 nations to 48, they substantially increased the total prize money up for grabs too.
However, while the financial reward is significant, it remains secondary to the ultimate prize.
The eventual champions will lift the FIFA World Cup trophy, write another chapter in their nation’s football history and earn the right to call themselves the best team in the world. They will cement their legacy and their place amongst football’s greatest.
AFRICA MAKES HISTORY – AND BILLIONS – AS A RESULT
Africa also enjoyed its biggest FIFA World Cup campaign after FIFA expanded the tournament.
For the first time, 10 African nations qualified for football’s biggest tournament.
South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Cape Verde, DR Congo and Tunisia all represented the continent across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Tunisia were the only African side eliminated during the group stage. Consequently, they received $9 million for finishing between 33rd and 48th, which equated to approximately R147 million.
Meanwhile, Morocco produced the continent’s best performance by reaching the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to France.
As a result, the Atlas Lions earned $19 million in prize money for reaching the last eight, equivalent to more than R311 million.
That brought Morocco’s total earnings from FIFA World Cup 2026 to R336 million.
This is because FIFA also awarded each of the 48 nations that qualified $1.5 million to cover tournament preparation costs.
That equates to approximately R25 million.
