Bafana Bafana FIFA World Cup 2026 countdown hits 40 days as ticket prices revealed
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Bafana Bafana will kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in exactly 40 days when they face co-host nation Mexico at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 11 June.

FIFA dropped ticket pricing details recently – and the numbers will make your eyes water.

The cheapest seat for our boys’ opening match costs R2 800. That’s more than half a month’s salary for a petrol attendant.

Premium seats go for R18 500. That’s what a nurse earns in two thirds of a month.

FIFA’s ticket prices shock Mzansi fans

FIFA announced the full ticket structure for the tournament according to ESPN.

Category four tickets – the cheapest available – start at R2 800 for group stage matches. Category one premium seats cost R18,500 for the same games.

Final tickets range from R11 000 to a staggering R140 000.

That top price buys you four VW Polo Vivos – with change left over for petrol.

Most South Africans will be watching from home or at the local tavern, but the lucky few heading to Mexico are looking at serious money.

A family of four attending just the Mexico match would spend R11 200 on the cheapest tickets alone before flights, accommodation or food. That’s nearly what a teacher earns in a month.

Still, thousands of Bafana Bafana fans are expected to make the trip. The atmosphere in Mexico City will be lekker either way.

Ronwen Williams attracting European attention

Bafana Bafana’s number one, Ronwen Williams, is turning heads across Europe after his brilliant season with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 34-year-old shot-stopper has kept 18 clean sheets in 28 league matches this campaign.

The Athletic reports that scouts from three Premier League clubs watched Williams during Mamelodi Sundowns’ recent CAF Champions League matches.

While no bids have arrived yet, the interest is real.

Williams earns around R350 000 a month at Mamelodi Sundowns, decent money by PSL standards.

A move to England could see that jump to R2 million a month or more. That’s G-Wagon money every six weeks, bra.

Williams has been Bafana Bafana’s most consistent performer over the past two years.

Coach Hugo Broos will be praying no transfer drama disrupts preparations before the World Cup kicks off.

Korea Republic preparing in style for Group A

One of South Africa’s Group A opponents Korea Republic are sparing no expense in their World Cup preparations according to The Korea Herald.

Korea Republic will bring a 50-person support staff including chefs, physios, analysts and even a sports psychologist. Their preparation budget for the tournament sits at R280 million. That would buy 1 000 VW Polo Vivos.

By comparison, SAFA’s entire World Cup budget is around R180 million.

Korea Republic reached the semi-finals on home soil in 2002 and the Round of 16 in Qatar in 2022. They have serious pedigree.

Son Heung-min remains their star man, earning R3.6 million a week at Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC. Prior to his move to America, he played 333 matches for Tottenham Hotspur.

Bafana Bafana face Korea Republic on 25 June (SA time) in our third group match. The boys will need to be sharp.

Celebrities already booking Mexico trips

The World Cup always attracts the rich and famous, and this year’s tournament is shaping up nicely.

Variety reports that several A-list celebrities have already confirmed they’ll attend matches.

Drake has booked a suite for Canada’s group stage matches. Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican megastar, will be at multiple Mexico games. He’s worth R3.6 billion so those R140 000 final tickets won’t dent his wallet.

Charlize Theron told a US talk show last month she’s planning to attend Bafana Bafana’s opener against Mexico. Our Saffa Hollywood queen supporting the boys would be special.

Trevor Noah has also hinted he’ll be in Mexico for at least one Bafana Bafana match.

The World Cup brings everyone together. From Soweto to Sandhurst, from Hollywood to Mexico City, the whole world will be watching.

Did you know?

The Estadio Azteca, where Bafana Bafana will play Mexico, sits 2 200 metres above sea level. That’s higher than Johannesburg at 1 750 metres.

The thin air makes running harder and the ball travels faster. Maradona scored his famous ‘Hand of God’ goal there in 1986.

The match will also be a repeat of the opening match of the 2010 World Cup when Bafana Bafana and Mexico played to a 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium.
