Bafana Bafana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to deliver a significant financial boost to the South African Football Association (SAFA).
The governing body is guaranteed more than R200 million before a ball has even been kicked.
The financial reward comes as South Africa prepares for its first FIFA World Cup appearance in over a decade, with both SAFA and local clubs set to benefit from the tournament’s expanded prize structure.
HOW MUCH MONEY WILL BAFANA BAFANA EARN FOR SAFA?
SAFA is expected to receive approximately $12.5 million (more than R200 million) in qualification and preparation funding from FIFA.
The figure includes $10 million awarded for qualifying for the tournament. There is a further $2.5 million earmarked for team preparation costs ahead of the competition.
Should Bafana Bafana fail to progress beyond the group stage, SAFA would still be guaranteed a share of the tournament prize pool. It will be worth roughly $18 million (around R312 million).
The national team has also been promised additional incentives, with SAFA offering players an R8 million qualification bonus. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has further pledged R5 million in rewards for the squad.
WHICH CLUBS WILL BENEFIT?
The financial rewards will not be limited to SAFA and the players.
Clubs that release players for World Cup duty will receive compensation through FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme. Payments are expected to range between $12,000 and $15,000 per player per day from the start of the national team’s training camp until their elimination from the tournament.
With several Bafana internationals contracted to Betway Premiership clubs, the payments could provide a welcome financial injection for local teams. They will be rewarded for developing and releasing talent to the national side.
For SAFA, however, the biggest prize may be the opportunity to combine a successful World Cup campaign with one of the largest financial windfalls in the association’s recent history.
