Kaizer Chiefs have added several new faces to their playing squad. However, a few of them still need to debut.

Luke Baartman could debut soon after legal disputes over his contract with his former club, Cape Town Spurs.

Benson Mhlongo is a fan of the young attacker, but sees areas that need work.

OH NO: Kaizer Chiefs star struck by second-season syndrome

What does Mhlongo think of the new Kaizer Chiefs star Baartman?

Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates midfielder Benson Mhlongo is in no doubt that Luke Baartman can go straight to the top of the game.

“I can describe Luke Baartman as a new sensation—one of the rare intelligent players at his age. He is very smart,” Benson Mhlongo said.

“I just hope Kaizer Chiefs will be patient with him because he doesn’t show much work rate at training; he is more calculative. While others may be running at full speed, he takes a more measured approach.

“However, he creates moments reminiscent of legends like Shoes Moshoeu and Jabu Pule. Baartman is a player with international potential.

“Those who understand football know that such players are strategic in their play. They act when necessary. On the field, Baartman will indeed bring magic. I hope he works on his stamina, and soon he could find himself alongside players like Relebohile Mofokeng in the national team,” Mhlongo added.

“I admire Baartman’s fighting spirit. He can jump, challenge, and never shies away from 50/50 situations. He’s brilliant with the ball, can score goals, and is an excellent finisher.

“What I appreciate most is that he is not just another young player who aims to entertain the supporters. He plays with the intelligence of Themba Zwane. It was a privilege to coach him and witness his special talent firsthand.

“It has been too long since we’ve seen such a player; he reminds me of Iniesta from FC Barcelona. Baartman is undoubtedly a refreshing talent,” the Alexandra-born Orlando Pirates legend concluded.

SAFPU rejoices ruling on Kaizer Chiefs duo

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has welcomed the ruling affirming a principle that players must not be bound by contracts that are no longer valid. SAFA Arbitrator Hilton Epstein ruled in favour of Velebayi and Luke Baartman, declaring them free agents. They are now free to play for Kaizer Chiefs. SAFPU sees this as a major win for players.

Pitso Mosimane’s name crops up again, but why?

There’s no doubting Pitso’s acumen as a coach. He’s excelled in South Africa, North Africa and the Gulf. ‘Jingles’ is a three-time CAF Champions League winner, scooping Africa’s biggest club prize twice with Al Ahly (2021, 2021) and once with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016.
