Transfer news: Brazilian midfielder to Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have opened talks to sign Brazilian attacking midfielder Yan Sasse on a free transfer ahead of the new season.

According to iDiski Times journalist Lorenz Köhler, the Betway Premiership giants have already made contact with the 29-year-old as they look to strengthen their squad.

The Brazilians will have room for another foreign player as Miguel Reisinho nears the Chloorkop exit gate.

REUNION WITH MAMELODI SUNDOWNS COACH MIGUEL CARDOSO

Sasse has emerged as one of their priority targets. The playmaker is no stranger to South African football fans after scoring the winning goal for Espérance Sportive de Tunis against Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2024 CAF Champions League semi-finals.

The move could see Sasse reunite with Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, who previously coached him at Espérance Sportive de Tunis.

Reports suggest Sasse had little interest in moving to the Premier Soccer League during previous transfer windows. However, Cardoso’s arrival at Chloorkop has changed the player’s thinking, with the Brazilian now keen on completing the move despite attracting offers from clubs in North Africa and the Gulf region.

The midfielder began his professional career at Coritiba, where he made his senior debut in 2016. He later enjoyed a loan spell at Vasco da Gama before continuing his career with Çaykur Rizespor in Turkey.

After returning to South America to represent Sport Recife and América Mineiro, Sasse moved to Wellington Phoenix in Australia’s A-League, where he continued to build his reputation.

YAN SASSE AT ESPÉRANCE

Sasse took his game to another level after joining Espérance Sportive de Tunis in 2023. The Brazilian quickly became one of the club’s key players with his creativity, work rate and ability to deliver in big matches.

He made 104 appearances for the Tunisian giants, scoring 24 goals and providing 13 assists across all competitions. His performances established him as one of the standout attacking midfielders on the continent.

If Mamelodi Sundowns complete the deal, they will add a proven CAF Champions League performer with experience across Brazil, Turkey, Australia and Tunisia as they continue to build a squad capable of challenging for more continental success.
