THREE things Kaizer Chiefs still have to play for this season

Kaizer Chiefs CAF push puts spotlight on coaches

Kaizer Chiefs may no longer be part of the title race between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates as the latter two rivals battle it out to be crowned 2025/26 Betway Premiership champions – but they do still have plenty to play for.

Amakhosi could still play a pivotal role in determining who wins the league.

And that’s not all.

The Glamour Boys are also fighting for a CAF Confederation Cup spot while players and the club’s co-coaches have their careers on the line as time winds down this season.

THREE THINGS KAIZER CHIEFS STILL HAVE TO PLAY FOR

1. KAIZER CHIEFS COULD HEAVILY INFLUENCE THE TITLE RACE

Up next for Kaizer Chiefs are defending champions and current log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Amakhosi travel to Loftus Versfeld for a crucial mid-week tie against The Brazilians on Wednesday, 6 May.

Kick-off is at 19:30.

With four fixtures left in the Betway Premiership season, just two points separate Mamelodi Sundowns (61) and Orlando Pirates (59) in the latest standings.

That means Bucs fans will be hoping The Brazilians drop points against Amakhosi.

Mamelodi Sundowns need to drop points – and Orlando Pirates must likely win all their remaining matches – if the Buccaneers are going to be crowned champions for only the fifth time in the PSL’s professional era – and for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs supporters will finally be on the same page with both sets of fans routing passionately for Amakhosi against Masandawana.

2. AMAKHOSI CO-COACHES NEED TO FINISH STRONGLY

It feels like just the other day when Amakhosi fans were calling for Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef to be axed following their humiliating 3-0 Soweto derby loss to Orlando Pirates.

Thereafter, Kaizer Chiefs bounced back strongly with a seven-match unbeaten streak – including 5 wins and 2 draws – and they now sit on the cusp of qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Unfortunately, their streak ended on Wednesday night after they suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against Siwelele FC.

With just four matches left of the season, the Kaizer Chiefs co-coaches know they need to finish strongly before a decision is made on their futures.

Following the commencement of the season, the Amakhosi hierarchy will do a performance assessment on the technical team.

There will no doubt be question marks over Kaze and Youssef’s future following anothers season without any silverware.

To finish third is the bare minimum expected and they will want to finish as strongly as possible to increase their chances of staying on at Naturena.

As mentioned, Kaizer Chiefs can no longer win the league.

To be honest, they have never really looked like title contenders this campaign.

So, what is the best possible outcome for Amakhosi this season?

CAF football. Specifically qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup.

In order to play in the CAF Confederation Cup next season, Kaizer Chiefs need to finish in third place – and they are well poised to do so.

Amakhosi currently sit in third spot on 47 points, five clear of fourth-placed AmaZulu who currently occupy fourth place.

That means Kaizer Chiefs need eight more points to guarantee securing that third place.

Two wins and two draws or three wins from their remaining four matches will do the trick.

Kaizer Chiefs’ remaining 2025/26 fixtures
