This is why Kaizer Chiefs are not scoring enough goals

Despite Kaizer Chiefs’ third position in the league, five points behind leaders Orlando Pirates, and topping Group D in the CAF Confederation Cup, the Soweto giants have looked blunt in attack.

The goal return reads 15 goals in 15 league matches, while they have managed six goals in five continental games.

Former assistant coach Khan believes the issue starts with how Amakhosi use their wide areas. He feels full-backs such as Aden McCarthy and Dillan Solomons have been too restricted, while wingers Glody Lilepo and Pule Mmodi have failed to make dangerous movements.

“Firstly, you are playing with two full-backs,” Khan said on Soccer Beat. “When you do that, especially at home, those full-backs need to push higher.

“McCarthy and Solomons have the pace, and McCarthy has quality in his forward passing. That should allow your wide attackers to tuck in and get closer to the striker.”

Khan added that Kaizer Chiefs are not getting enough end product from their attackers.

“I don’t think Flavio Da Silva and Glody Lilepo are giving us what we should be getting in terms of goal-scoring opportunities. That is the missing link. When you have attackers with pace, and they receive service, they must convert those chances.”

The former Kaizer Chiefs tactician also pointed to Amakhosi’s lack of combination play in the final third.

“If you look at the goals against Al Masry, one was a penalty, and the other was a smash-and-grab. Kaizer Chiefs are not scoring goals from combination play, crosses, and one-touch finishing. That element is missing.”

Khan warned that this could become a bigger problem later in the competition.

“When you reach the latter stages and face the cream of the crop, the question is whether they have enough. The quality is there, but the finishing is not refined. It has to improve, or they will struggle against better teams.”
