‘Thank you madala’: South Africans react to historic World Cup progress

Bafana Bafana fans are in a celebratory mood after the national team secured a historic place in the last 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0 on Thursday to qualify for the knockout stages of a World Cup for the first time in the country’s history. Thapelo Maseko scored the decisive goal in a hard-fought encounter.

Bafana started brightly and created several chances in the opening stages through Oswin Appollis and Maseko.

The first opportunity came after a swift counter-attack, with Maseko finding himself clear on goal. However, his left-footed effort was blocked by a South Korean defender.

From the resulting corner, Appollis had a chance to break the deadlock but fired his effort straight at the goalkeeper.

South Africa continued to press forward and nearly found the opener in the 30th minute when Thalente Mbatha forced a fine save from the Korean shot-stopper.

Maseko was again presented with an opportunity before halftime, but he dragged his shot wide of the target.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the second half. Maseko found the back of the net to hand Bafana a priceless lead and ultimately secure passage to the last 32.

Hugo Broos’ men then produced a disciplined defensive display to protect their advantage and seal a famous victory.

The result sparked wild celebrations among South African supporters on social media, with many praising Broos and his players for making history.

@AndileNcube wrote: “History makers. Hugo, you’ve been worth your weight in gold. Boys, you’re the first to do it, and now you’ll forever be remembered as the team that showed the way.”

@Ke_Obakeng wrote: “We woke up, we supported you and you delivered. We can’t thank you enough.”

Bafana into the next round

@871345Thapelo wrote: “South Africa, you are great! Do not let anyone ever fool you and tell you that you are not! Man, this is the best country and I love you. What a performance from the boys! I am filled with so much pride and joy!”

@PovertykillerB wrote: “We criticised him, he listened even though he’s arrogant. Thank you, Madala.”

What’s your take on the game?
