The Sundowns and Zimbabwe international escaped unharmed after gunmen allegedly opened fire on his vehicle.
In less than 24 hours after surviving a terrifying shooting incident, Lunga was back at training with his teammates in Chloorkop. The defender escaped without injuries and has since opened an attempted murder case with the Hillbrow Police Station.

Fresh details have now emerged about what happened before the shooting. Contrary to early reports, Lunga was not in the area to assist a friend when the incident unfolded.
According to The Citizen’s sister publication Phakaaathi, the Zimbabwe international was travelling to church with his younger brother when they got lost in Hillbrow. The publication reported that the pair were unfamiliar with the area before the attack occurred.
The report added that an unknown suspect allegedly mistook Lunga for an undercover police officer before opening fire on the vehicle.

Despite coming under attack, Lunga managed to drive away from the scene with his younger brother. Neither of them was injured during the incident.
According to Phakaaathi, “Lunga was actually on his way to church with his younger brother when the incident occurred.” The publication also reported that the suspect “mistook Lunga for an undercover police officer” before allegedly opening fire.
Police are continuing their investigation after Lunga opened an attempted murder case. The incident attracted widespread attention after conflicting reports circulated on social media about what had happened.
Meanwhile, Lunga has resumed preparations for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season. Miguel Cardoso’s side returned to training last week as Sundowns begin their build-up to the new campaign.
Lunga started his professional career at Chicken Inn FC in Zimbabwe, where he progressed through the club’s development structures before breaking into the first team.
His consistent performances earned him a move to Lamontville Golden Arrows in 2018, and he quickly established himself as one of the most dependable left-backs in the Premier Soccer League.
The Zimbabwe international made more than 60 appearances for Golden Arrows before securing a transfer to Sundowns in 2021. He also impressed for his country at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he produced a standout display against Mohamed Salah and Egypt.
