Sundowns backed to win league despite recent slip
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mamelodi Sundowns dropped points, and suddenly the noise around the title race has the volume turned up.

Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch FC has allowed Orlando Pirates to remain on top of the league with 58 points, one ahead of Sundowns in second place but with a game in hand.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STILL KEEPING THE HOPE AND CONFIDENCE

According to Mahlangu, there is no reason to panic just yet. For him, this is simply the nature of football, especially at this stage of the season where every point starts to matter more.

“The nature of football is inherently unpredictable, Pirates are on our heels,” Mahlangu explained to KickOff. “As the late Cebo Manyaapelo aptly noted, in football there is no therefore.”

Mahlangu admitted Sundowns have not been at their sharpest, especially in front of goal. That lack of cutting edge has allowed teams like Stellenbosch to stay in games longer than expected, and they eventually punish them.

“Our recent performances have not been optimal, especially since we are not consistently scoring,” he said.

“Success in football often depends on ruthless goal-scoring, and maintaining a two-goal lead is the safest strategy, as a one-goal cushion can be insecure.

“”Sundowns are under no significant stress,” he asserted, “and the probability of winning the league remains high,” the former Sundowns pro added.
