Soweto derby: These players are on a Bafana Bafana FIFA World Cup ‘trial’

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are set to do battle in a Betway Premiership clash on Sunday, 26 April that represents more than just a Soweto derby clash.

The latest edition of the Soweto derby will carry far more than just bragging rights.

Kick-off is at 15:00.

For Orlando Pirates, victory is essential to keep their Betway Premiership title ambitions alive, while Kaizer Chiefs will look to lock up a CAF Confederations Cup spot.

For players on both sides, it also presents one of their last opportunities to impress national coach Hugo Broos and stake a claim for Bafana Bafana selection for FIFA World Cup 2026.

SIPHO CHAINE VS BRANDON PETERSON

Currently, Kaizer Chiefs have no players in the Bafana Bafana set-up, while Orlando Pirates had six representatives in the most recent 23-man squad that faced Panama in back-to-back friendlies.

Neither goalkeeper – Sipho Chaine nor Brandon Peterson – featured in that squad.

Instead, Sekhukhune United ‘keeper Renaldo Leaner was surprisingly selected as the third-choice option.

Both Chaine and Peterson, however, remain firmly on Broos’s radar.

Reports indicate that Peterson was strongly considered and came close to selection, but missed out due to injury.

Chaine’s omission, meanwhile, has been linked to disciplinary concerns.

Despite this, the Orlando Pirates No 1 still has a realistic chance of making the final Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Peterson, on the other hand, remains Kaizer Chiefs’ strongest candidate to represent the club at the global spectacle.

For the Amakhosi captain, the most convincing way to force his way into contention would be to deliver a standout performance against Orlando Pirates in front of a packed Soweto derby crowd.

A defining moment – perhaps a crucial match-winning save against Orlando Pirates or a league-deciding moment of individual brilliance against Mamelodi Sundowns in the coming weeks – could further strengthen his case.

ORLANDO PIRATES STAR FAVOURED

As it stands, Chaine appears to be the frontrunner, while Leaner has entered the conversation, and Peterson remains an outside contender.

However, time is still on his side. Performances will ultimately play a big role in deciding their fate.

With the FIFA World Cup fast approaching, this is arguably one of the most significant fixtures remaining for Kaizer Chiefs, alongside their clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

It also marks the final Soweto derby before the global showpiece to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Who should be the three Bafana Bafana goalkeepers at FIFA World Cup 2026?
