Soweto derby | Orlando Pirates player ratings: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED?

On recent form, Orlando Pirates entered last Sunday’s Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs as clear favourites.

However, the latest chapter of this fierce rivalry ended in a 1-1 stalemate with Amakhosi doing just enough to deny the Buccaneers all three points.

It was a gritty, high-intensity encounter where time and space were at a premium, leaving little room for flair.

Here’s a closer look at which Orlando Pirates players rose to the occasion – and who fell short of their expectations when the heat of the Soweto derby was on.

WHO FIRED FOR ORLANDO PIRATES

Kamogelo Sebelebele – 7.5/10

Sebelebele delivered when it mattered most, scoring the crucial equaliser to ensure Orlando Pirates walked away with a point and denied Kaizer Chiefs local bragging rights.

Beyond the goal, his performance was defined by his relentless work rate.

Operating box-to-box, he competed strongly in aerial duels, handled one-on-one situations with confidence, and made several timely tackles and blocks.

It was a complete, hard-working display that underlined his growing importance to the side.

Thalente Mbatha – 7/10

Mbatha brought composure to the Bucs midfield in what was a high-pressure derby environment.

He showed good decision-making, knowing when to recycle possession and when to push forward.

His calm presence helped Orlando Pirates maintain structure.

It’s clear he is maturing into a key figure in the heart of their midfield.

Relebohile Mofokeng – 7.5/10

The PSL Player of the Month continues to be one of the league’s standout performers. While this wasn’t his most influential outing, he remained a constant threat.

Mofokeng worked tirelessly to find space and stretch the Kaizer Chiefs defence, even without direct goal involvement.

However, credit must go to ex-Bucs star Thabiso Monyane, who marked him closely and limited his impact throughout the match.

WHO FLOPPED FOR THE BUCS AGAINST AMAKHOSI

Sipho Chaine – 5/10

Chaine had a relatively quiet afternoon by his high standards. Having kept an impressive 16 clean sheets this season, conceding a goal will come as a disappointment.

He also lacked his usual sharpness in distribution, with his service from the back failing to ignite Orlando Pirates’ transitions effectively.

By contrast, it was his counterpart, Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen, who had an absolute blinder in goal.

Lebone Seema – 5.5/10

Seema endured a mixed performance.

Typically a reliable presence at the back for the Bucs, he was caught out defensively on a few occasions and didn’t quite display his usual authority.

Makheleni Makhuala – 5.5/10

Makhuala struggled to impose himself on the game.

He found it difficult to match the intensity of the derby.

Meanwhile, he offered limited creativity in the Bucs midfield leaving Orlando Pirates short of attacking spark in key moments.

KAIZER CHIEFS CAPTAIN’S BRILIANCE SALVAGES DRAW

Brandon Petersen led from the front with his performance on the pitch. He made several goal-saving saves among his six saves.

Furthermore, he motivated his defenders through communication on the field.

For Kaizer Chiefs, it was a respectful draw given the fact that the odds were heavily stacked against them.

It feels like co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Ben Youssef’s charges have started to turn their fortunes around.

Now, they are favoured to finish third and are well on track to qualify for the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup.

In the end, it was a result that feels like two points dropped for Orlando Pirates.

While there were individual positives, the Buccaneers will know that sharper execution could have made the difference in a derby that demanded just that little bit more.
