While Bradley Cross showed encouraging signs during the previous campaign, Kaizer Chiefs still lack proven depth at left-back.
Injuries to Paseka Mako and Nkanyiso Shinga exposed that weakness and highlighted the need for further competition in the position.
If Amakhosi are looking for an experienced option with Bafana Bafana pedigree, then Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fawaaz Basadien could be worth monitoring.
This is a three-part series. You can read part 1 and part 2.
KAIZER CHIEFS MISSED OUT ON BASADIEN
Fawaaz Basadien joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC during the 2025 winter transfer window after establishing himself as one of the Betway Premiership‘s most consistent full-backs.
However, the move has not gone according to plan.
The 28-year-old has struggled for regular opportunities under Miguel Cardoso. Strong competition from Aubrey Modiba and Divine Lunga has limited his involvement, while youngster Thato Sibiya has also moved ahead in the pecking order.
The situation has affected Basadien’s standing in the national team setup. Once a regular feature in Hugo Broos’ plans, the defender has seen his Bafana Bafana opportunities diminish due to a lack of playing time.
Before moving to Chloorkop, Basadien enjoyed a successful spell with Stellenbosch FC. He made more than 100 appearances for the club and played a key role in their historic Carling Knockout triumph.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALITY FOR KAIZER CHIEFS
Basadien’s rise to the top level was built on persistence. Hailing from Grassy Park, Cape Town, the defender previously represented Milano United, Ubuntu Cape Town and Moroka Swallows before making his breakthrough at Stellenbosch FC.
His attacking quality, crossing ability and defensive reliability eventually attracted interest from several clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs.
Amakhosi reportedly pursued the defender before his move to Mamelodi Sundowns. However, the club failed to reach Stellenbosch FC’s valuation, allowing Masandawana to complete the deal.
A move to Naturena would undoubtedly be complicated. Basadien remains under a long-term contract at Mamelodi Sundowns, giving the Tshwane giants significant control over his future.
Even so, Kaizer Chiefs may be tempted if an opportunity arises. Basadien offers proven Betway Premiership experience, international recognition and the quality to challenge immediately for a starting place.
At 28, he remains firmly in his prime and could provide Kaizer Chiefs with a reliable solution in a position that still requires strengthening.
