Kaizer Chiefs attacker Mfundo Vilakazi is rediscovering his form this season after enduring a difficult campaign previously.
The 20-year-old playmaker, a product of the Amakhosi development system, made his senior debut for the Soweto giants in 2024 at just 18 years old.
Since then, he has grown into one of the club’s most exciting young prospects and earned international recognition with Amajita at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Vilakazi having a good season with Kaizer Chiefs
Speaking on SuperSport Unplugged in 2024, Vilakazi opened up about his journey into football.
“I chose football because I didn’t enjoy school. Even when I tried to apply myself, I failed,” he said.
Despite not finishing school, Vilakazi has become a Kaizer Chiefs fan favourite and also one of the most exciting young footballers in the country.
This season, Vilakazi has contributed two goals and two assists in 23 appearances across all competitions. His vision, passing range, and ability to unlock defences have earned him praise from the Amakhosi technical team.
Despite his young age, Vilakazi has frequently been at the heart of Chiefs’ attacking play, often setting the tempo for the team.
‘His growing partnership with Mduduzi Shabalala has proven particularly influential, with the duo combining effectively to drive results.
When Vilakazi and Shabalala are in sync, Kaizer Chiefs become a far more dangerous side. Their chemistry, alongside the emergence of fellow youth product Wandile Duba, who has been finding the back of the net consistently, has helped Amakhosi go unbeaten in their last four matches.
Vilakazi’s improved form has also brought the best out of players like Glody Lilepo and striker Flavio Silva, further strengthening Chiefs’ attacking options.
With momentum building, a strong finish to the season could see Kaizer Chiefs secure a third-place finish and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.
