Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is set for a R21.8 million payday after leading the national team to a historic FIFA World Cup campaign.
According to SABC Sport’s Velile Mnyandu, SAFA received R218 million in prize money after Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32.
Under the agreed bonus structure, Broos will receive 10 percent of the total amount, while assistant coach Helman Mkhalele is expected to earn about R8 million.
HUGO BROOS LEAVES HISTORIC LEGACY
Broos transformed Bafana Bafana from struggling underachievers into one of Africa’s most respected national teams. The Belgian coach took charge in May 2021.
He inherited a squad lacking confidence and ranked outside the world’s top 50. He immediately changed the team’s culture by demanding professionalism, discipline and relentless hard work.
Broos built a clear tactical identity and placed his trust in hungry, young players, many of them from the Premier Soccer League. He also enforced strict standards within the camp and created one of the most consistent periods in South African football.
His longevity also made history. Broos became Bafana Bafana’s longest-serving head coach, breaking the previous record held by Clive Barker.
BAFANA BAFANA REACHED NEW HEIGHTS
The results soon followed. Broos guided Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa’s best finish at the tournament since 2000.
He then led the national team to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It was South Africa’s first qualification through the normal qualifying route since 2002, ending a 24-year wait.
The 2026 tournament became the crowning achievement of Broos’ reign. He guided Bafana Bafana to the Round of 32, making South Africa the first team in the country’s history to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds.
During his five-year spell, Broos coached Bafana Bafana in 60 matches. He recorded a 48 percent win rate and suffered only 12 defeats. His team also produced a remarkable 22-match unbeaten run between 2024 and 2025.
The Belgian never lost a home match during his tenure. He stepped down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup to return to his family, leaving behind a revitalised Bafana Bafana squad and one of the greatest coaching legacies in South African football history.
