SA Ref Appointed By FIFA

Posted on October 4, 2025

Former Premier Soccer League referee Victor Gomes has been appointed to the FIFA Referees Committee, which is chaired by respected former referee Pierluigi Collina.

Gomes retired from refereeing in 2022 after he represented South Africa at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he was in charge of two group stage games, namely France 4-1 win over Australia and Spain’s 2-1 defeat to Japan.

He was also allocated as the fourth official in Argentina’s quarter-final win on penalties against Netherlands.

He made his PSL debut in 2008. He was voted PSL Referee of the Season in 2012/13 and 2017/18 and has been an international referee since 2011. His last local game was the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in October 2022.

Gomes himself was elated with his appointment by the world football governing body.

“I am happy to contribute to the game on the continent and to the betterment of African refereeing,” he told Safa.net.

“Thank you to FIFA, CAF and SAFA for entrusting me with this big responsibility.”

Gomes also serves as a FIFA Referees development officer and assessor, VAR and Technical Instructor, CAF Referees Committee vice-chairman and IFAB Technical Advisory Panel member
