Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe opened up about the relationship during an interview with Robert Marawa on Sundowns TV.
He revealed that the friendship between the two football bosses has also influenced the relationship between their children.
THE KHOZA AND MOTSEPE FAMILIES GO WAY BACK
According to Tlhopie Motsepe, the relationship between the two families dates back many years, with the younger generation growing up around each other.
“Both Dr Irvin Khoza and Dr Patrice Motsepe have a long standing relationship, and it’s one, me Mpumi and Nkosana have been able to replicate in terms of our times together and going to the same primary school aswell,” Tlhopie said.
His comments highlight that the connection between the two families is not simply linked to their positions at Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Tlhopie, Mpumi and Nkosana were able to develop their own relationship while growing up together, including attending the same primary school.
ORLANDO PIRATES AND MAMELODI SUNDOWNS RIVALRY
The football rivalry between Sundowns and Pirates has evolved into one of the most explosive and high-stakes fixtures in South African football, defining the modern era of the domestic game.
While the Soweto Derby remains historically iconic, the battle between Masandawana and the Buccaneers has taken centre stage when it comes to championship relevance.
Sundowns’ relentless pursuit of perfection and possession-based excellence has forced Pirates to consistently raise their game when challenging for domestic supremacy.
The modern dynamic of the rivalry has also produced a fascinating division of spoils, with Sundowns commanding a long-term hold on the Betway Premiership title while Pirates have carved out a reputation as cup specialists.
The Buccaneers have frequently found success against Sundowns in knockout competitions, famously defeating them on penalties in the 2023 MTN8 final before securing a dramatic 2-1 victory in the 2024 Nedbank Cup final.
The rivalry also extends into the transfer market, with both clubs continuously looking to strengthen their squads and compete for the best available talent.
Meanwhile, the two sides will battle in the MTN8 final on Saturday 10 October at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
