Bafana Bafana could be heading for one of the biggest coaching appointments in South African football. Pitso Mosimane officially applied to replace Hugo Broos as national team coach.
Broos announced well before the 2026 FIFA World Cup that he intended to retire after the tournament. The Belgian has since admitted he is still considering his future following Sunday’s Round of 32 exit to Canada. Nevertheless, Safa has already begun preparing for life after the veteran coach.
PITSO MOSIMANE AMONG MORE THAN 80 APPLICANTS
According to Sunday World, Mosimane is among more than 80 candidates who have applied for the South Africa job.
Safa Technical Committee chairman Jack Maluleke confirmed the former Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly and Esteghlal coach is officially in the running.
“I can confirm that amongst the many top names of coaches who have applied for the Bafana Bafana job is indeed Pitso Mosimane. I have his CV with me,” Maluleke told Sunday World in Monterrey, Mexico.
“We all know the passion of coach Pitso, his love for the country, and what his profile looks like. But he will also go through the interview process like everyone else because I have over 80 applications with me.”
SAFA TARGETS AFCON QUALIFIERS
Despite Mosimane’s glittering coaching CV, Safa insists it will put every applicant through the same recruitment process before selecting the next Bafana Bafana coach.
Maluleke revealed Safa plans to conclude the interviews soon after returning from the World Cup so the new coach can immediately begin preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.
“So, we will finalise the process when we return home after the World Cup. We need someone who will come in and get the job started for the upcoming Afcon qualifiers around September,” he added.
Should Broos stick to his long-standing retirement plan, Mosimane is now firmly in the conversation. Will he become the next man to lead South Africa?
