Rest In Peace: Former Orlando Pirates coach dies
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Reddit

Orlando Pirates have paid tribute to former head coach Roy Barreto, who has passed away after leaving behind a lasting mark on the history of the Buccaneers.

The Soweto giants confirmed the sad news on Tuesday, remembering Barreto as a coach whose contribution to the club’s success will always hold a special place among supporters.

ORLANDO PIRATES TITLE-WINNING CAMPAIGN REMEMBERED

Barreto joined Orlando Pirates from Free State Stars ahead of the 2002/03 season and immediately delivered one of the club’s biggest achievements by winning the Betway Premiership title.

“Orlando Pirates is saddened by the passing of our former Coach, Roy Barreto,” the club said. “His contribution to the history and success of the club will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”

The Malawian-born coach brought tactical discipline, calm leadership and strong man-management skills to the Soweto giants. Under his guidance, Orlando Pirates recorded six consecutive league victories during their championship-winning campaign, setting a club record at the time.

His success came during a period when the Buccaneers needed stability, and Barreto quickly earned respect for the way he organised the team and handled pressure.

A DIFFICULT SECOND SEASON

The following campaign proved far more challenging for Barreto and Orlando Pirates after the club lost key figures who played important roles in the title triumph.

The departure of captain Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela to Tottenham Hotspur, followed by the tragic passing of striker Lesley “Slow Poison” Manyathela, affected the team deeply.

The Buccaneers struggled to maintain their previous form and exited competitions such as the SAA Supa8 and Coca-Cola Cup earlier than expected.

Pressure increased after a heated clash against Manning Rangers in October 2003, when some supporters expressed their frustration towards the coach. The situation eventually led to Barreto and the club agreeing to end their relationship by mutual consent.

Although his time at Orlando Pirates lasted only 13 months, Roy Barreto secured his place in club history by delivering a league championship.

His title-winning season remains a reminder of the impact he made at Mayfair, and the Buccaneers faithful will remember him as one of the coaches who helped shape the club’s proud legacy.
