Relebohile Mofokeng could be playing UEFA Champions League football next season following his move to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.
The 21-year-old completed his transfer from Orlando Pirates this week, taking another significant step in a career that has gathered remarkable momentum over the past two years.
Union SG booked their place in the third qualifying round of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League after finishing runners-up in the Belgian Pro League. However, their route to Europe’s biggest club competition remains a challenging one.
The Belgian outfit will enter the competition through the League Path in the third qualifying round before facing a two-legged play-off. Victory in both ties would see Union SG qualify for the 36-team UEFA Champions League league phase.
Rele Mofokeng can help Union SG into UEFA Champions League
Mofokeng is expected to play a key role in the club’s bid to reach the competition proper. Widely regarded for his creativity, close control and composure in the final third, the South African international arrives in Belgium with valuable experience despite his young age.
The gifted playmaker has enjoyed a remarkable 12 months, representing Bafana Bafana at both the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup, while also helping Orlando Pirates reach the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
Should Union SG successfully negotiate the qualifying rounds, Mofokeng would earn the opportunity to test himself against some of the biggest clubs and best players in world football. A place in the UEFA Champions League would not only accelerate his development but also further cement his status as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents.
For a player who has risen from Orlando Pirates’ academy to the international stage in such a short space of time, the UEFA Champions League could be the next chapter in an already extraordinary journey for Rele Mofokeng.
