On a bit of down-time during Kaizer Chiefs’ pre-season training camp in Spain, new acquisition, defender Thabo Moloisane, expressed his joy at achieving one of the biggest aims of his football career.
Here’s what the 27-year-old had to say in response to a series of questions ranging from how he got started as a footballer to his message to the Amakhosi fathful.

On his first steps as a footballer
I grew up in Meadowlands, Zone 1, and started playing football from age six or seven as little boy running after this round thing. I grew up in a footballing family so it was usual to watch games, go to ‘kasi’ tournaments and I joined my first local team at around eight years old.
On his youth career
I started out at Bophelo Impilo Academy and was scouted eight months later by Sundowns, where I was from age 14 until I was 20. I was originally a midfielder and frequently a striker, although when Sundowns scouted me I was playing at centre-back. At Sundowns, coach Godfrey Sapula converted me to a right-back before I reverted to centre-back a bit later.
On his time at Stellenbosch FC
After being relegated with Maritzburg United, signing for Stellenbosch was a breath of fresh air because it was a club without hype and I could just go out and show my qualities. The achievements and history we created at Stellenbosch is something I am proud of. We made people take notice of the club.
On finally signing for Kaizer Chiefs
To be honest, it took a bit long. It was ‘on the cards’ for about three years. When my agent informed me of the move I was a little surprised and very happy because it meant that I was doing well to be wanted by Chiefs. I spent time at Naturena when I was a young boy learning under the supervision of the kitman at the time so it’s a place I know pretty well; it’s is a part of my youth and I grew up loving the club and this is a dream come true for me.
On becoming a Glamour Boy
My first ‘task’ as a young boy at Chiefs was to collect tickets for a match, and now I am one of the players who will represent Chiefs in front of the supporters. It means so much to me to be at the biggest club in South Africa. It comes with a responsibility to maintain the high standards that have made this club great.
On his reception at Naturena
When you join a huge Club there are big players there, stars, yet everyone welcomed me with open arms and made me feel comfortable. There is a brotherhood here. My first few training sessions have been good. I am settling in and learning what is expected of me. I am someone who is always eager to improve.
On the response form supporters
I received a lot of DMs and my social media profile has grown tremendously since I joined. It gives me the feeling that I am at the place where people expected me to come. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and now I am determined to show them what I am about and produce on the field of play.
On the training camp in Spain
We have been here for a couple of days and it has been great to be with the guys. The weather has been pretty hot but we have trained well and training in these conditions will benefit us during the season when we play both at home and in Africa. We are building a sense of unity among us to carry into the new season.
Message to the Amakhosi faithful
I would love them to come out and support us in numbers. We are going to be very ambitious this season in all competitions we are in, so I encourage them to be part of our journey as our 12th man and we will do everything we can to give them something to celebrate. I look forward to seeing them at the Toyota Cup when we take on Scottland FC in Rustenburg on Sunday, 26 July.
