Petersen plays down ‘kingmakers’ tag ahead of Sundowns clash

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen insists the team’s priority is securing maximum points against Mamelodi Sundowns rather than influencing the destination of the league title.

Amakhosi could delay Sundowns’ march to a ninth consecutive league crown if they deny them victory when the sides meet on Wednesday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

However, Petersen made it clear that Chiefs are focused on their own ambitions finishing in the top three and qualifying for CAF Confederation Cup football next season.

“I think for us, the most important thing is that we’ve told ourselves we want to finish as high as possible. Obviously, we want to secure continental football for next season,” said Petersen as per GOAL.

“Our main objective is to accumulate as many points as we can and finish the season strongly. I would say we’ve had a good run in the league compared to previous seasons.”

With Chiefs potentially playing a role in the title race, a positive result against Sundowns could boost Orlando Pirates in their pursuit of a first league title in 13 years.

Despite this, Petersen dismissed talk of being “kingmakers,” stressing that the team’s focus remains internal.

“I know everyone is talking about us having a say in the title race, but for us, it’s about improving where we can, staying consistent, and making sure we get maximum points from our remaining fixtures,” he said.

“It’s not about deciding who wins the league. It’s about finishing the season strongly and securing continental football for next season.”

Petersen key to Chiefs beating Sundowns?

Petersen was the difference when Pirates were held by Chiefs last month in the Soweto Derby. The Bucs supporters will be hoping the 31-year-old keeper produces a similar performance against Masandawana on Wednesday.

Will Chiefs stop Downs?
