Orlando Pirates may have already strengthened their squad ahead of the new season, but there is still plenty of work to be done if they are to defend their domestic trophies and challenge for continental glory.
The Buccaneers have confirmed four new signings ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane has arrived from Stellenbosch FC, while defender Sbangani Zulu joins from Richards Bay.
The club has also secured the services of winger Bohale Ngwato and forward Ghampani Lungu.
The new arrivals come as part of a squad overhaul that has already seen several players leave the club, including Sipho Mbule and Tshegofatso Mabasa.
Orlando Pirates seeking R100 million
Despite the additions, many supporters believe Pirates still need to strengthen further, particularly in key positions.
One player strongly linked with a move to Mayfair is Polokwane City and Bafana Bafana right-back Thabang Matuludi.
The highly-rated defender has been tipped to join the Sea Robbers after the FIFA World Cup, with Pirates looking to reinforce their options on the right side of defence.
With Thabiso Lebitso and Bandile Shandu no longer at the club, Matuludi could prove to be an ideal replacement and add valuable depth to the squad.
There is also uncertainty surrounding the coaching department. Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou recently suggested that he would take time to assess his future at the club, leaving questions about who will lead the team into the new campaign.
The Buccaneers are likely to sell star player Relebohile Mofokeng in the coming weeks. Ngwato, who was signed from Siwelele, is seen as his replacement.
Pirates face a demanding season ahead. In addition to defending the Betway Premiership title and their domestic cup crowns, the Buccaneers will be targeting success in the CAF Champions League, where a prize pool of around R100 million awaits the eventual winners.
With expectations higher than ever, the coming weeks could prove crucial as Orlando Pirates continue to shape a squad capable of competing on all fronts.
