The Orlando Pirates player’s former mentor, Elton Katangolo, has revealed the difficult circumstances that shaped Hotto’s journey from the township of Swakopmund to the top of South African football.
“Football was the only ticket out of the township for him,”Katangolo told Kick Off. “He lost his mom at a young age, and he had to fend for himself under trying circumstances.”
Katangolo, who mentored Hotto at Blue Boys FC, believes the player’s upbringing played a major role in his success. “Where we come from here in Namibia is part of what carries him.”
Born in Swakopmund on 29 October 1990, the Orlando Pirates star started his career with Blue Boys and African Stars. His explosive pace and creativity soon attracted attention outside Namibia.
In 2014, Hotto made the move to the Premier Soccer League (PSL). He joined Golden Arrows before later representing Bloemfontein Celtic.
His breakthrough came at Bidvest Wits, where he developed into one of the league’s most effective wide players. His performances eventually attracted Orlando Pirates, who signed him in 2020.
FROM POLICE CELLS TO BUCS GLORY
Before reaching the biggest stage, Hotto faced another extraordinary setback. Katangolo recalled an incident when the youngster ended up in police custody shortly before an important match.
“One time we even had to get him out of police cells to play for us the next day, and the police officers understood.” Despite the challenges, Hotto refused to let his circumstances derail his football career.
At Orlando Pirates, he developed into a highly versatile player. He has played as a winger, left-back and wing-back while becoming an important figure for the Buccaneers.
His biggest club achievement arrived during the 2025/26 season, when Hotto helped Orlando Pirates win the Betway Premiership title.
The triumph ended the club’s 14-year wait for the league championship. Orlando Pirates also completed a domestic treble by winning the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup.
Hotto has also built a remarkable international career with Namibia. He made his debut in 2013 and later scored twice in the 2015 COSAFA Cup final as Namibia won their first title.
At the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, he produced another iconic moment by scoring the winning goal against Tunisia. From losing his mother young to overcoming difficult circumstances, Hotto has travelled a remarkable road.
