Orlando Pirates must resist the back door route to Africa
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Orlando Pirates should not even consider returning to the CAF Champions League through the back door.

They had 90 minutes to score four goals at home against Saint Eloi Lupopo last month. To their credit, they fought until the end and forced a penalty shootout, which they ultimately lost.

The Buccaneers know they squandered their chance in the first leg, where they suffered a 3-0 defeat in the DRC. Regardless of the poor officiating and treatment they received, Orlando Pirates should not be losing 3-0 to a team that has never even reached the CAF Champions League group stages.

While their spirited 3-0 effort at home showed that the team had the potential to stage a comeback, it also highlighted their lack of preparedness to win the competition.

They came close last season, but that was largely due to a favourable draw in the group stages and an easier path to the semi-finals. This time, they face MC Alger in the quarter-finals and then Pyramids in the semis, both of which they should have been able to defeat.

Why should Orlando Pirates disregard the CAF Champions League?

The Buccaneers have lodged a complaint with CAF against Saint Eloi Lupopo following their elimination from the competition. They have raised concerns regarding the eligibility of Lupopo’s head coach, Guy Bukasa, and two other players.

CAF has responded to Orlando Pirates’ complaint, stating that the matter is under investigation. Despite their elimination from Africa’s elite competition, the Buccaneers have been in great form in the PSL, claiming the MTN8 cup. With only three points separating them from Mamelodi Sundowns, perhaps the Sea Robbers should focus more on the Betway Premiership.

They haven’t tasted league victory in 13 years, and this could be their season if they shift their focus to domestic football. If Pirates’ complaint is successful, they will return to the CAF Champions League in place of Lupopo.

This would mean they would face rivals Sundowns in the group stages, along with MC Alger and Al Hilal. However, Orlando Pirates return to the CAF Champions League could derail their PSL campaign. There’s always a next time if they aim to earn their second star.

Can the Buccaneers return to CAF?
