Orlando Pirates face do-or-die Stellenbosch clash
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Orlando Pirates’ 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign takes them to Athlone Stadium next as they prepare to take on Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday night.

Kick-off is at 19:30.

The decisive month of what has been a captivating league campaign kicks off with another must-win encounter for the Buccaneers as they look to gain ground on log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Orlando Pirates face a Stellies outfit eager to continue their ascent up the standings with a spot in next season’s MTN8 still well within reach.

Only 12 more points are on offer for each club in the remainder of the campaign, and maximising returns will be high on the priority list for both.

This sets up another enthralling battle between in a rivalry that has served up many memorable contests.

Rare blemish

Having established permanent residence near the top of the standings in recent seasons, Stellenbosch have had difficulties hitting the same heights in the ongoing campaign.

They have spent most of the season in the bottom half of the standings and are currently in 10th place – three points away from a possible entry into the top eight.

The men from the Winelands missed a chance to break into the coveted half of the table following defeat in their last outing, going down to Polokwane City in a game played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

That result was however only a rare blemish in what has mostly been a productive spell of results and only the second loss in 2026.

Since the beginning of the year, they have collected 20 points in 12 matches via five victories and as many draws.

Consistency on home turf has been key to their recent turnaround as they go into their clash with Orlando Pirates still undefeated in the Cape since December.

They have beaten three of their last five visitors, sharing spoils with the other two.

The visit from the Soweto giants presents an opportunity to add a big scalp to their collection.

It’s a task they will have to undertake without a few big names in suspended defender Thabo Moloisane – who is banned for one match after an accumulation of yellow cards – as well as on-loan striker Tshegofatso Mabasa who is unavailable for selection.

Bucs Team News

The fixture is meanwhile another do-or-die encounter for Orlando Pirates, who have drifted five points behind the table topping Mamelodi Sundowns with one game in hand.

Victory on Tuesday would narrow that gap and help maintain their place in one of the closest title races in recent years.

Much like their hosts, the Buccaneers head to Athlone following a disappointing result in their last outing having dropped points in a Soweto derby stalemate against rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

That result was one of three draws in their ongoing unbeaten run in the league, which currently stands at nine matches.

They have collected 10 out of an available 12 points on the road during this period, taking their away tally to 27 in 12 matches this season.

Following a slip-up in their most recent away fixture, a return to winning ways will be crucial as the Buccaneers look to bolster their title ambitions.

There could be a shuffling of the pack with the likes of Patrick Maswanganyi and Evidence Makgopa possibly set for bigger roles after making cameos in recent weeks.

Head-to-Head

The first league encounter between Orlando Pirates and Stellies only dates back to the 2019/20 season, but the two sides have already delivered many memorable encounters.

The last of these was the reverse fixture at Orlando Amstel Arena, where Kamogelo Sebelebele’s early strike proved to be the difference as all three points went the way of the hosts on the night.

The win was the Soweto giants’ fourth in the fixture, bringing them level with the men from the Winelands, while five of the 13 league battles between the two sides have failed to produce a winner.

While there is nothing to separate between the two sides in terms of results, the Buccaneers lead things as far as goals are concerned.

They have found the net 15 times in the fixture, with Stellies accounting for 11 of the 26 goals scored.

TV Coverage and Ticket Info

The match is scheduled to kick off at 19:30 and will be televised live on SuperSport PSL.

Tickets to attend the game are sold out.
