Orlando Pirates DDC reserves make history
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Orlando Pirates youngsters went into the clash knowing a draw would be enough to secure the championship, but they avoided any late drama by producing a controlled display against the only team still capable of catching them.

The result saw the Buccaneers finish the season on a remarkable 75 points, the highest tally in the history of the competition, while also becoming the first Orlando Pirates reserve side to win the DDC crown.

ORLANDO PIRATES DEFENCE STANDS FIRM

Sundowns started the game aggressively and nearly found an early breakthrough from a dangerous free kick, but goalkeeper Bayanda Zulu reacted well to keep the scores level.

Orlando Pirates slowly settled into the match and began to dominate territory midway through the first half despite losing Joy Manana to injury. Lyle Chatburn came on and immediately helped the hosts push Sundowns deeper into their own half.

The pressure eventually paid off just before halftime when defender Christian Derbyshire rose highest inside the box to head Orlando Pirates into the lead.

That goal changed the atmosphere completely inside the stadium as the Buccaneers suddenly looked more confident and composed in possession.

Sundowns were then punished again in first-half stoppage time after Oratile Rantasi was fouled in the penalty area. Mpho Padime stepped up calmly and buried the penalty to double the advantage.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS MISS THEIR CHANCE

The visitors came out stronger after the break and spent long periods attacking the Orlando Pirates defence. Derbyshire and Moses Mphekgoane were forced to stay alert as Sundowns searched desperately for a way back into the game.

Their biggest opportunity arrived when Bennet Mokoena found himself in front of an open goal. But the striker failed to connect properly with the ball.

Orlando Pirates almost stretched the lead even further late in the game. Seth Green was brought down inside the box following a quick attack. Jabulani Mokone stepped up from the spot but saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Nqobani Biyela.

Fortunately for Bucs, the missed penalty carried no consequences. The hosts comfortably managed the closing stages before celebrations erupted at the final whistle.

It was the perfect ending to a superb campaign from the young Buccaneers. Not did they lift the trophy but also did so with a record-breaking points tally.
