Orlando Pirates could end 5 110 day title drought TODAY
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The 2025/26 Betway Premiership season could take a decisive turn on Saturday afternoon as the penultimate round delivers seven high-stakes fixtures with the title race, top-eight battle and relegation fight all hanging in the balance.

But all eyes will be on Soweto, where Orlando Pirates stand one win away from effectively ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance and sealing a first league title since the 2011/12 season.

For those Buccaneers fans who are counting, it was 5 110 days ago that Orlando Pirates were champions of South Africa.

One More Step for Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates host Durban City knowing victory would draw them level with Mamelodi Sundowns on 68 points, though with a vastly superior goal difference that would leave only a mathematical miracle denying them the title.

Mamelodi Sundowns have already completed their campaign with a goal difference of +36, while Orlando Pirates sit comfortably ahead on +44.

Even a narrow victory over Durban City would leave the Buccaneers requiring only to avoid a historic collapse in their final match against Orbit College.

In reality, a win on Saturday would amount to mission accomplished.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have timed their run perfectly.

Orlando Pirates are unbeaten in 11 league matches, winning eight and drawing three, while conceding only three goals in their last seven outings.

At the other end they have been ruthless, scoring 22 times during that period.

Their confidence will also be boosted by a 2-0 victory over Durban City in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

Durban City Fighting for Their Own Prize

Durban City will not arrive in Soweto merely to make up the numbers. They remain locked in a tense battle for a top-eight finish and every point is crucial heading into the final stretch.

A result against Orlando Pirates could secure their position among the MTN8 next season, but stopping the in-form Buccaneers at Orlando Stadium represents one of the toughest assignments in South African football right now.

Relegation Battle Nears Breaking Point

At the bottom, tension continues to rise.

Orbit College, Marumo Gallants, Magesi FC and Chippa United are the four sides desperately attempting to avoid the relegation playoffs or automatic demotion.

With only two rounds remaining, a single victory could transform survival hopes, while defeat may leave clubs relying on results elsewhere.

A Defining Weekend

The Betway Premiership has delivered drama throughout the campaign, but Saturday promises to be one of the defining days of the season.

For Orlando Pirates, it is a chance to finally reclaim domestic supremacy after more than a decade of frustration.

For everyone else, survival, pride and top-eight ambitions are all still on the line.
