The 23-year-old, who made eight appearances during his debut campaign, controlled possession with confidence and looked increasingly comfortable in the heart of the Buccaneers’ engine room.
The Mali international thrilled supporters with silky first touches, effortless turns and clever line-breaking passes throughout the contest. His elegant style on the ball reminded many fans of the technically gifted footballers often associated with Soweto rather than a player born in Bamako, Mali.

Mariko’s performance stood out because it broke the stereotype often attached to West African midfielders. While many are recognised for their physicality and relentless work rate, the Buccaneers star displayed flair and creativity every time he received possession.

His rise to Orlando Pirates began with an outstanding spell at Djoliba AC, where he enjoyed a remarkable 2024/25 campaign. Mariko scored 14 league goals from midfield, finished as the Malian Première Division top scorer and walked away with the league’s Player of the Season award.
The gifted midfielder also helped Djoliba AC reach the CAF Champions League group stage before Orlando Pirates secured his signature ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign. He went on to contribute to the Buccaneers’ league title success and their MTN8 triumph during his first season at the club.
ABDOULAYE MARIKO CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has consistently backed Mariko despite limiting his game time during his debut season. Earlier in the campaign, the coach admitted the club may have introduced the midfielder too quickly before he had fully adapted to the speed and intensity of South African football.
Rather than rush his development, Ouaddou opted for a patient approach to help Mariko understand the team’s tactical demands. The coach explained that the technical team did not want to “burn” the talented midfielder by placing too much responsibility on him before he was ready.
As the season progressed, Ouaddou praised Mariko’s rapid improvement and highlighted his versatility to operate as a number six, eight or 10. His physical power and height stands out as an added bonus.
If his latest performance is anything to go by, Mariko looks ready to take on a much bigger role for Orlando Pirates this season. His display in Spain showed that the Buccaneers have a midfielder capable of combining African grit with the technical elegance South African supporters love to watch.
