Orlando Pirates’ academy pays off with three blockbuster transfers in 11 months

Orlando Pirates have continued to reap the rewards of their renowned youth academy, selling three of their brightest young talents abroad within the space of 11 months.

All three players came through the club’s DDC team and secured moves overseas at the age of 21 or younger, underlining the Buccaneers’ growing reputation for producing elite talent.

The first to leave was Mohau Nkota, who joined Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq in July last year. The winger enjoyed a promising start to life in Saudi Arabia before an injury brought his debut season to an early end.

Promising defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi became the second academy graduate to depart after completing a high-profile transfer to Major League Soccer outfit Chicago Fire.

On Wednesday, Orlando Pirates confirmed they had reached an agreement with Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise for the transfer of Relebohile Mofokeng.

The move remains subject to the 21-year-old attacker passing a medical and agreeing personal terms, but it marks another major success story for the Soweto giants’ youth system.

Orlando Pirates making millions from selling top players

Mofokeng enjoyed a sensational campaign, playing a pivotal role as Pirates lifted a domestic treble while establishing himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting young players. His performances also attracted widespread interest from clubs across Europe.

The sales of Nkota, Mbokazi and Mofokeng have reportedly earned Orlando Pirates more than R120 million in transfer fees, providing the club with a significant financial boost.

That figure could rise even further should winger Oswin Appollis complete his expected move abroad. The Bafana Bafana international has been linked with several clubs in Europe following an impressive season for both club and country.

Orlando Pirates’ ability to develop and sell young players for substantial fees highlights the club’s long-term investment in its academy and reinforces its status as one of Africa’s leading talent producers.

Which young player is next to leave?
