One clean sheet in 10 World Cup games for Bafana Bafana
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Bafana Bafana have struggled defensively at the FIFA World Cup, conceding 18 goals in just 10 matches across three tournament appearances.

South Africa have never progressed beyond the group stage in any of their World Cup campaigns, and after their opening defeat at the 2026 tournament, their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds are already under pressure.

Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their Group A opener at the Azteca Stadium, conceding inside the opening 10 minutes.

The scoreline could have been far worse had it not been for several outstanding saves from captain Ronwen Williams, while Mexico also squandered a number of clear-cut chances.

South Africa will now turn their attention to Thursday’s crucial clash against the Czech Republic, knowing that a positive result is vital to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Historically, Bafana have found life difficult against European opposition at the World Cup.

In five matches against European teams, they have conceded eight goals, with their heaviest defeat coming against France in 1998.

The defensive concerns are nothing new. During their maiden World Cup appearance in 1998, South Africa conceded six goals in the group stage.

They let in five goals at both the 2002 and 2010 tournaments despite playing only three matches in each campaign.

If Bafana are to stand any chance of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history, tightening up at the back will be essential.

Keeping clean sheets against the Czech Republic and South Korea would significantly boost their chances of progressing.

However, unless Hugo Broos’ side can address their defensive frailties quickly, they risk conceding more goals and seeing their World Cup dream come to an early end.

Bafana have never scored more than two goals at a FIFA World Cup and have only kept one clean sheet in the 10 matches they featured in.

Who should Hugo Broos put in defence for the Czech game?
