Fernando Da Cruz remains without a victory after Kaizer Chiefs’ first three pre-season matches in Spain. However, the scorelines have not overshadowed the progress made on the training ground and during matches.
The French-Portuguese coach has already introduced several tactical principles that could define Amakhosi in the 2026/27 Betway Premiership. Here are five encouraging signs from his first weeks in charge.
1. FERNANDO DA CRUZ IS RESTORING THE AMAKHOSI DNA
The biggest positive has been Da Cruz’s commitment to possession-based football. Kaizer Chiefs training clips have regularly featured 5v2 rondo drills, which are designed to improve quick passing, movement and decision-making under pressure.
The sessions encourage players to keep possession and create passing options instead of playing long clearances. That approach reflects the attractive style many supporters associate with the Glamour Boys.
2. KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYERS IN DIFFERENT ROLES
Another encouraging sign is the coach’s willingness to use players in different positions. Reeve Frosler has featured at right-back, left-back and in central midfield, while Dillan Solomons has been deployed on the right wing despite spending most of his career in defence.
Mfundo Vilakazi has also switched to left-wing rather than the right, giving the squad greater tactical flexibility and providing Da Cruz with more options during matches.
3. THE MID-BLOCK IS TAKING SHAPE
Defensively, Kaizer Chiefs have begun operating in a structured mid-block instead of sitting deep inside their own half when under pressure. The system allows the team to stay compact while remaining close enough to launch attacks after winning possession.
Although it still needs refinement, the organisation has been visible throughout the Spain tour.
4. KAIZER CHIEFS HAVE A CLEAR GAME PLAN
Another positive has been Kaizer Chiefs’ discipline after taking the lead. The team has looked organised both in and out of possession instead of relying on moments of individual brilliance.
While late equalisers against Rangers FC and Al-Kholood Club were disappointing, the overall structure remained intact. The next step will be improving concentration during the closing stages of matches.
5. FERNANDO DA CRUZ HAS REMAINED CALM
Da Cruz has handled a difficult pre-season with impressive composure. Kaizer Chiefs have lost key players, including Aden McCarthy, while Glody Lilepo is expected to leave after becoming one of the club’s most productive attackers.
His preparations have also been disrupted by injuries to Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba and new signing Khanyisa Mayo. At the same time, Amakhosi are struggling to conclude deals for Langelihle Phili and Seluleko Mahlambi.
Despite those challenges and transfer frustrations, Da Cruz has remained calm and positive throughout the tour. That composed leadership could prove crucial as Kaizer Chiefs continue rebuilding for the new Betway Premiership campaign.
