The Kaizer Chiefs academy product completed the move worth more than R7 million, excluding add-ons, and has signed a three-year contract with the European side. Amakhosi announced the transfer on Tuesday

Less than 24 hours after his departure was confirmed, McCarthy took to social media to thank the club that developed him from a young academy player into a first-team regular.

ADEN MCCARTHY SAYS GOODBYE

In a heartfelt message, McCarthy reflected on his journey at Naturena, describing it as a dream fulfilled.

“I arrived as a boy with a dream and leave as a man with memories that will last a lifetime,” McCarthy saidl

“From a ball boy to a senior team player, wearing this badge was more than a dream – it was an honour.”

The defender progressed through the club’s youth structures before captaining the reserve side and eventually breaking into the senior team.

His first-team debut arrived in May 2025, making him and his father, former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy, the fifth father-and-son pairing to represent the Amakhosi first team.

McCarthy quickly established himself as one of the club’s brightest young talents and became a regular during the 2025/26 campaign.

THANK YOU, KAIZER CHIEFS

The defender also expressed his gratitude to everyone who played a role in his development during his time at the club.

“Thank you to every coach, teammate, staff member, and supporter who helped shape my journey. Your belief, guidance, and support mean more than words can express.

“As I chase the next chapter of my dream, I leave with immense gratitude and pride.

“Thank you, Kaizer Chiefs,” he added.

McCarthy leaves Amakhosi after making 33 appearances in all competitions and scoring two goals. McCarthy made 33 appearances and scored two goals for Chiefs. He helped the club secure a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

The move to Sabah FK gives the defender an opportunity to test himself in European football. The Azerbaijani champions are set to compete in the qualifying rounds of next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Chiefs supporters will be disappointed to see one of the club’s brightest academy graduates leave. However, McCarthy’s farewell message underlined the strong connection he built with the club during his rise from ball boy to first-team player.

The next chapter of his career will unfold in Europe. But his final message made it clear that Kaizer Chiefs will always hold a special place in his heart.
