African giants open talks with Sundowns star!

Mamelodi Sundowns left a lasting impression in their FIFA Club World Cup clash against Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund, dominating large portions of the game despite falling to a narrow 4-3 defeat.

Cardoso’s side produced a fearless display, outplaying Dortmund in key departments and dictating the pace of the game. The Brazilians stunned fans and especially local critics by controlling 59% of the ball and stringing together 511 passes, significantly more than BVB’s 315.

Many expected the Betway Premiership champions to be overawed by the German giants, but the South Africans shattered that narrative with their fluid passing, tactical discipline, and intense pressing from the first whistle.

Bellingham blames “extremely hot” conditions

Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham opened up about his team’s issues with ball retention during the post-match press conference, pointing directly to the scorching midday heat.

“The conditions made it so difficult, especially for us as a European team,” said Bellingham, as quoted by FARPost.

“They [Sundowns] played a fantastic game, and I’m sure they are used to that kind of weather. But it’s something we’re gonna have to adapt to as the tournament goes on. And these are just the demands of this competition. So, it was really difficult. In a game like that, you have to find solutions and try to play fast.

“I think eventually in the game, we did much better, and we can build on it.”

His comments highlight just how much the local climate played into the hands of the more acclimatised Sundowns squad, who pushed Dortmund to the brink in a pulsating group-stage contest.

Dortmund edge closer: Sundowns must-win

With four points from two games, Borussia Dortmund sit atop Group F heading into their final group stage fixture against South Korea’s Ulsan HD on Wednesday, 25 June at 9 PM (SA time) at TQL Stadium.

Sundowns, now in third with three points, face a do-or-die showdown against Brazilian outfit Fluminense at the Hard Rock Stadium. Only a win will guarantee the Pretoria club a spot in the next round of the prestigious tournament.

African giants earn global respect

Sundowns may have lost the match, but they gained international plaudits for their commanding display. With an aggressive style, superior possession, and fearless approach, Masandawana proved they belong on football’s biggest stage.

Their upcoming battle against Fluminense promises fireworks, and a potential statement for African club football.

Do you think Mamelodi Sundowns will qualify for the next round?
