Chiefs-Pirates derby sells out in record time
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will do battle in a must-win clash for both sides on Saturday, 28 February, at the FNB Stadium.

The biggest rivalry in South African football returns as Chiefs and Pirates go head-to-head in a crucial Betway Premiership encounter on Saturday afternoon. Kick off is at 15:30 (SA time).

This time, however, there is more than pride, history and honour at stake. For the first time in many years, this fixture has massive implications for both teams’ title ambitions. Both sides remain firmly in the race – and that raises the stakes even higher.

PREVIEW: CHIEFS VS PIRATES

The pride of Soweto. Bragging rights. The derby that divides South African families.

The storied history and rich culture of the Soweto derby. It all carries tremendous weight but this weekend, that is only part of the story.

PIRATES MUST WIN TO KEEP THE PRESSURE ON SUNDOWNS

Pirates last won the league title in 2011/12 – almost 14 years ago.

This represents their best opportunity in years to reclaim the Betway Premiership crown, and with 13 matches remaining, they are firmly in contention.

Currently, Pirates sit second on 38 points from 17 matches. They have just been overtaken by defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who now occupy top spot due to a superior goal difference.

This means the Buccaneers cannot afford to drop points or fall further behind. They must keep the pressure on the Brazilians if they are to remain serious title contenders. They will also be eager to bounce back after their 2-1 defeat to Sundowns at the FNB Stadium and their shock Nedbank Cup exit at the hands of Casric Stars.

CHIEFS FACE A MUST-WIN SITUATION

For Chiefs, this match is equally critical. It represents their biggest opportunity in many years to mount a serious title challenge.

Amakhosi last lifted the league trophy in the 2014/15 season – more than a decade ago. Since then, fans have been waiting for a genuine shot at glory.

Their Nedbank Cup campaign ended three weeks ago, and that disappointment was compounded by their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup. To make matters worse, Chiefs suffered a 2–1 league defeat to Stellenbosch, which dealt a significant blow to their title hopes.

Chiefs currently sit on 30 points from 16 matches – eight behind Sundowns and Pirates. However, Amakhosi have a game in hand. Victory on Saturday is essential if they are to keep pace with the frontrunners.

A win would reduce the gap to five points. Whilst, a draw would feel like a loss to Chiefs because they simply have to close the gap nd restrict Pirates from adding any points to their total tally.

Therefore, for Amakhosi, nothing less than three points will suffice in the latest edition of the Soweto derby.
