Kaizer Chiefs Transfers: 3 attacking midfielders to sign – Part 1

While Mduduzi Shabalala remains the first-choice number 10, Kaizer Chiefs will also be keen to reduce the burden on the youngster. Luke Baartman is still finding his feet at senior level, while Mfundo Vilakazi has only featured sporadically in the role.

One player who deserves serious consideration is Neo Maema.

The 30-year-old playmaker is currently on loan at Simba SC in Tanzania from Mamelodi Sundowns and is approaching the final stages of his contract. The Soweto giants previously attempted to sign Maema in late 2025 and are understood to have continued monitoring his situation.

This is Part 1 of a three-part series profiling three different players.

KAIZER CHIEFS HAVE WANTED MAEMA BEFORE

Amakhosi’s interest is nothing new. The Glamour Boys first explored a move while Maema was struggling for regular game time at Mamelodi Sundowns, with the player later confirming that his agent informed him of the club’s approach.

Despite the opportunity, Maema opted against the move, choosing instead to leave South Africa in search of a fresh challenge and more consistent football. That decision led him to Simba SC in Tanzania, where he prioritised regular minutes and continental competition.

At Simba, Maema recorded a combined total of three goals and assists across all competitions while earning one official Man of the Match award.

The connection with Kaizer Chiefs runs even deeper. Maema’s father is a passionate Amakhosi supporter, making the Soweto giants an important part of the family’s football story.

WHY NEO MAEMA MAKES SENSE

Known for his sharp dribbling, intelligent movement, excellent vision and dangerous left foot, Maema has long been regarded as one of South Africa’s most technically gifted attacking midfielders.

Born in Bloemfontein, he rose through the youth structures of Bloemfontein Celtic before breaking into the senior side in 2018. He quickly established himself as one of Phunya Sele Sele’s key creative players, making more than 50 appearances and helping the club reach the 2020 Nedbank Cup final.

For Kaizer Chiefs, Maema would offer something different. He brings experience, creativity and proven PSL quality while still possessing the ability to unlock stubborn defences with a single pass or moment of skill.

With Sirino expected to depart and Shabalala carrying much of the creative responsibility, signing an experienced operator like Maema could provide immediate impact while allowing the club’s younger attacking midfielders to continue their development without excessive pressure.
