Kaizer Chiefs to play for R8.9 million in 21 days
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kaizer Chiefs kicked off 2026 with a much-needed boost. They defeated Golden Arrows thanks to an Aden McCarthy header in the 38th minute.

The narrow win ended a four-match winless run, where Kaizer Chiefs had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Al Masry in the CAF Confederation Cup, followed by consecutive draws against Zamalek (1-1), Chippa United (0-0) and TS Galaxy (0-0).

Now, the focus has shifted to an African dream. Honour and history will be on the line, as well as a potential R8.9 million reward.

KAIZER CHIEFS RESUME THE CAF CONFEDERATION CUP

Amakhosi, currently third in Group D with one point, are under pressure to salvage the situation. With only the top two teams progressing to the quarterfinals, the next four matches may be do-or-die.

The big run begins with a tricky trip to Zambia this weekend. Kaizer Chiefs face ZESCO United on Sunday, 25 January.

Kick off will be at 15:00 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. It’s a must-win opener that could set the tone for the rest of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The Soweto giants will return home to host ZESCO United on 1 February, before welcoming Al Masry on 8 February in another high-stakes clash.

The group stage will end with a tough away trip to Zamalek on 15 February, a fixture that could decide qualification.

As things stand in Group D, Al Masry lead the table with six points, followed by Zamalek on four points. Kaizer Chiefs sit third with one point, while ZESCO United remain at the bottom with zero points.

If Amakhosi crash out at the group stage, they walk away with $400,000 (R6.47 million).

Finishing first or second in the group will confirm quarterfinals qualification, which guarantees $550,000 (R8.9 million), but it will be about more than money.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM AMAKHOSI?
