Kaizer Chiefs injury update: Three key defenders
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kaizer Chiefs are unlikely to have a strong representation at the 2026 World Cup in North America. It could have been different, though.

With eight months to go until the showpiece, the clock is ticking for Rushwin Dortley.

The 23-year-old central defender has been recovering patiently after going under the knife in March.

Dortley’s race against time for Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana

The first half of the 2024-2025 campaign was one to forget for Chiefs. Rushwin Dortley, however, was one of the true bright sparks of a season threatening to peter out into nothing. The 23-year-old central defender from Cape Town immediately looked assured and at home in big matches for Chiefs, and indeed South Africa. Losing Dortley in March was a massive blow as the youngster needed surgery. He quickly became a key pillar in the defence, making 21 appearances across all competitions before being struck down. The technical team will need to be cautious when they reintroduce him to the fold after such a lengthy layoff, but it’s undoubtedly a huge plus to see him on the comeback trail.

Will Kaizer Chiefs star Dortley go to the World Cup in 2026?

It’s likely to be touch-and-go. As with any serious injury, Dortley must overcome both mental and physical hurdles as he attempts to return to pre-injury form and fitness. World Cup 2026 kicks off on June 11th, so the 23-year-old has time on his side, but there’s not much wriggle-room, and there’s strong competition for places in the heart of defence. However, before the injury, he was one of the first names on the team sheet for Chiefs and Bafana.

“Rushwin Dortley is running around a pitch, which is nearly empty – well, except for physiotherapist Phumzile Ngobese, who is monitoring the defender’s run closely,” Amakhosi announced on 15 July.

Bafana boasts serious depth in defence

Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mbekezeli Mbokazi are the first-choice pairing for now, on paper at least. However, 20-year-old Pirates star Mbkoazi was suspended for the Rwanda clash. 21-year-old TS Galaxy man Khulamani Ndamane deputised admirably. With so many talented young prospects in Broos’ back four, it’s difficult not to get excited about this group and its potential to cause a stir at the World Cup.

What has Dortley said?

Rushwin Dortley sounds bullish about his chances of making a full recovery and getting back to his peak.

“One has to be strong mentally, as you want to play, but you can’t. It’s not easy, but I do know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.” Dortley told the club’s official website in July.
