Kaizer Chiefs keeping teammates disciplined

Kaizer Chiefs have spent much of the season enjoying clean sheets and leadership under pressure. At the centre of all has been Brandon Petersen, a goalkeeper who has waited before becoming a key figure.

The 31-year-old is enjoying a stunning 2025/26 campaign, producing 15 clean sheets in 23 matches across all competitions.

More importantly, he’s doing it as club captain, the same player who, not too long ago, had serious question marks hanging over his future.

After watching from the sidelines behind Bruce Bvuma and Fiacre Ntwari in goal, Petersen took the gloves for the Nedbank Cup final.

He delivered as Kaizer Chiefs beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium to end a decade-long trophy drought. From that moment, there was no looking back.

According to Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze, Petersen has been a leader long before the clean sheets.

“I would say character wise, he’s been the same since last season, since I’ve got here to this team I have found a very responsible player, even without wearing the armband, he is a figure of authority amongst the players, he’s the one collecting fines, he’s the one writing up players who are late, he’s a player with authority that everyone respects in the club,” he said.

“Good things happen to good people, and his commitment and dedication to training, sometimes last season he wasn’t playing, but the level of commitment and dedication, at training every single day without complaining was unbelievable.

The Burundian concluded that Petersen proved to everyone that he is not just a quality goalkeeper but a very good leader too.
