Kaizer Chiefs CAF push puts spotlight on coaches

Kaze and Ben Youssef have brought some momentum back to Chiefs, with a run of four consecutive wins that has lifted belief inside the camp.

One of their biggest challenges, however, has been turning promising youngsters into consistent starters who can perform at a high level every week. That balance between development and results has become the key talking point around their future.

SHAUN PERMALL SHARES HIS TAKE

Permall, formely the club’s striker, believes the recent good run is not enough to guarantee job security. “We shouldn’t be talking too much too quickly, what has happened recently I don’t think it’s enough for the two coaches to be kept on,” Permall told KickOff.

He went further, pointing out the timing of the turnaround and the broader picture of the season. “They’ve been there most of the season, Nasredine Nabi left early on in the season.

“They’ve been there for quite a while now. At a different time of the season they’ve been collecting points, but I still believe Chiefs still need a proper good coach.”

Permall also questioned the idea of a dual-coaching setup, saying it can sometimes slow down decision-making on the pitch.

“I remember back then when we were playing, Ace Khuse and Doc Khumalo took over from Muhsin Ertugral and all of a sudden we were collecting points. Such things happen. I don’t think having two head coaches really works. It’s not always good. One coach has to make a decision.

“I expect Chiefs to hire a proper coach. There’s plenty of them available right now. There’s Pitso there’s Benni available. Both of them are good enough and very clued up about South African football,” he added.

As things stand, Amakhosi remain in a strong position, but the debate around leadership is clearly far from over.

SHOULD KAIZER CHIEFS KEEP THE CO-COACHING MODEL NEXT SEASON?
