‘I wanted a Chiefs comeback’ – Lebese opens up on regret
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger George Lebese has admitted that leaving Amakhosi in 2017.

The 36-year-old retired attacker made a shock move to rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in 2017, leaving Chiefs fans and bosses disappointed. His move to Chloorkop was a flop as he only managed 10 appearances in two years before getting loaned to SuperSport United.

He then moved to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in 2020, but his time in the US was short-lived due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lebese left Chiefs only to get frustrated by Sundowns

After returning from the States, Lebese failed to find a club and eventually retired from football. Speaking to Josta Dladla’s podcast Izinja Ze Game, the former Downs winger explained what led him to join SuperSport United in 2019.

“It was during my frustration at that point,” Lebese explained how he left Sundowns on loan.

“I kept on calling my agent every day and I was like ‘find me something, i’m not going to play’. He had a good relationship with Stan [Matthews], and then they called SuperSport and asked if they can take me on loan but mind you, that loan also…my mind was messed up, man.”

“I spent six months on loan and I was never the same. I kept asking myself a lot of things because I couldn’t let Chiefs go. Wherever I went, it was like eishh jo [why did I leave Chiefs],” Lebese admitted.

The former winger hoped he would return to Amakhosi after an unsuccessful stint with Sundowns.

“I wanted to leave because I had an idea that I wanted to go back. I wanted to become a free agent because I thought maybe this was an opportunity to go back, remember, after I left, I apologised to Bobby,” Lebese added.

There was no return to Chiefs for Lebese after his loan ended at SuperSport. His move to US looked to be a financial gain but the Covid-19 pandemic halted his chances of making a success overseas.

Should Lebese stayed at Naturena?
