Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi believes Amakhosi captain Brandon Petersen is looking too comfortable in goal and has called for greater competition for the goalkeeper’s position.
The 32-year-old has come under increasing scrutiny after making costly mistakes in recent matches, despite enjoying an impressive 2025/26 campaign that saw him nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Season award.
Petersen’s latest error came in Chiefs’ 2-2 draw against Richards Bay, when his attempt to play out from the back went wrong. The mistake allowed Nqaba Xulu to punish Amakhosi inside the opening eight minutes.
Baloyi, who enjoyed a distinguished career with Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana, believes Petersen needs to raise his level and show greater urgency between the posts.

“Chiefs need to come to the party, especially in defence. I’m disappointed in the goalkeeper Petersen. I know he was our best keeper last season, to a point where we were calling for him to be part of the Bafana Bafana, but he is not repaying the faith we have in him,” Baloyi told Soccerbeat.
The former Bafana shot-stopper was particularly critical of Petersen’s demeanour and believes the Chiefs captain may have become too comfortable in his position.
“He looks too relaxed to me. When you play under the circumstances we are playing today, under those conditions, you have to be vigilant, you have to communicate with the defence,” Baloyi said.
“These are the mistakes you don’t need to make at the early stages of the season. We know he is the captain, he’s our number one, but Leaner and Bvuma need to push him. He looks like he’s too comfortable and relaxed.”
Petersen’s place in the starting XI could now come under further scrutiny, with Bruce Bvuma and Renaldo Leaner both waiting for an opportunity.
It remains to be seen whether Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz will stick with Petersen for the next match or make a change between the posts.
