Mbuthuma could cost Pirates the league with his misses, warns club legend

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has defended his underfiring striker, Yanela Mbuthuma.

The 24-year-old has netted just seven goals in 26 matches for the Buccaneers in all competitions. His lack of scoring has made him unpopular with Bucs fans as the team challenges Mamelodi Sundowns for the league.

In the league alone, Mbuthuma has scored just four goals in 18 appearances which is a poor return for a top striker of a team like Pirates. The striker has missed big chances this season which could have earned his team extra points.

Ouaddou though has urged Pirates supporters to support struggling Mbuthuma.

“The fans have to understand that Mbuthuma is their son and they have to support him and help him so he can help the team,” said Ouaddou before pointing out Mbuthuma’s overall contribution to the team.

“He’s doing a fantastic job between the lines but yes we do need that one goal and it will come and if our fans show him love and support, I’m 100% sure that he will be alright,” Ouaddou said as per Citizen.

Mbuthuma has scored seven goals for Pirates

Despite his lack of scoring as he has been able to combine with the likes of Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng.

With three assists, his goal contributions adds up to 10 in 26 appearances which is not a bad showing if he played a midtable PSL team.

As Pirates’ main striker, Mbuthuma’s numbers are very low and given his lack of composure in front of goals, his off-the-ball movement and combinations with teammates will always be overlooked.

Is Mbuthuma a good striker?
