Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are expected to be among the busiest clubs in the upcoming transfer window as they look to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season.

Both Soweto giants enjoyed encouraging campaigns last season, albeit with contrasting achievements. Pirates secured a historic domestic treble, while Chiefs finished third in the Betway Premiership, their highest league finish since 2020.

At Naturena, significant changes have already taken place off the field. Following the departure of co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, Chiefs appointed Fernando da Cruz as their new head coach as they aim to build on last season’s progress.

The Glamour Boys have also begun reshaping their squad. Defender Aden McCarthy has completed a move away from the club, joining Azerbaijan Premier League champions Sabah FK. The 22-year-old signed a three-year contract with an option to extend for a further season.

Chiefs and Pirates heading to Europe for pre-season

Reports have also suggested that winger Glody Lilepo could be on his way out, although the club is yet to officially confirm his departure.

Pirates, meanwhile, have already confirmed a number of exits. Sipho Mbule, Karim Kimvuidi, Bandile Shandu, Gilberto and Thabiso Lebitso have all left the club following the expiration of their contracts.

The Buccaneers have moved swiftly in the market to reinforce their squad, announcing the arrivals of Mthetheleli Mthiyane from Stellenbosch FC in a swap deal involving Lebitso, Sbangani Zulu from Richards Bay, Bohale Ngwato from Siwelele FC, and Ghampani Lungu, who also joins from Siwelele.

With both clubs expected to hold their pre-season camps in Europe in the coming weeks, further transfer activity is anticipated as Chiefs and Pirates prepare for what promises to be another highly competitive campaign.

Which team will have a good season?
